If you havent talked to him much the past 6 years, then maybe you can just start talking to him alot instead of asking him out from the getgo. And maybe you'll be able to be more sure by paying attention to the way he might talk back to you. Personally, (im a guy) if a girl i like gives me a mixed CD that way (through another person) then i'd seem very nervous around her. But that will depend on how he is. No need to rush asking him out ;)
